GBT – Guided Biofilm Therapy

The most advanced professional teeth cleaning experience

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • “Scale and polish treatments are painful – I need anaesthesia.”
  • “My teeth become very sensitive after cleaning, especially to cold.”
  • “My gums hurt for days after tartar removal.”
  • “I get stains often, but I’m afraid frequent cleanings will damage my teeth.”
  • “Plaque and tartar build up again quickly after cleaning.”

For many patients, professional teeth cleaning (often called “scale and polish”) is associated with discomfort, unpleasant sounds, and lingering sensitivity.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

The goal of professional dental cleaning is not only aesthetic—it is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

That’s why in 2016, Switzerland introduced a revolutionary clinical protocol: Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT).

Developed by EMS, a global leader in preventive dentistry, GBT is based on the latest scientific evidence linking dental biofilm (plaque) with oral and systemic diseases.

What is GBT professional teeth cleaning?

GBT is the gold standard in modern dental hygiene.

It removes:

  1. Dental biofilm (plaque)
  2. Tartar (calculus)
  3. Surface stains

Using a combination of:

  • Fine powder airflow technology
  • Warm water
  • Controlled air pressure

All delivered through the advanced Swiss device EMS AIRFLOW®.

This technology allows for thorough cleaning without damaging enamel or causing discomfort.

AFTER GBT

What is dental biofilm and why is it important to remove it?

Biofilm (plaque) is a thin layer of bacteria that forms daily on:

  • Teeth
  • Gums
  • Implants
  • Dental restorations

If not removed, it can lead to:

  • Tartar build-up
  • Gingivitis (gum inflammation)
  • Peri-implantitis (implant inflammation)
  • Periodontitis (advanced gum disease and bone loss)

Periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and is linked to systemic conditions such as:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes

GBT removes biofilm gently and thoroughly, even in hard-to-reach areas, helping maintain long-term oral health.

What does a GBT treatment include?

GBT is more than cleaning—it’s a personalised prevention.

It includes:

  • Professional removal of plaque, tartar, and stains
  • Tailored oral hygiene instructions
  • A structured 8-step clinical protocol

The 8 steps of GBT (approx. 60 minutes)

We perform a detailed examination of the oral cavity, teeth, gums, and implants in order to assess gum health and identify any possible signs of inflammation.

GOAL: To ensure a safe and individually tailored treatment.

We use a special dental disclosing agent that makes biofilm and dental plaque clearly visible on the teeth and surrounding tissues. Since biofilm is naturally almost invisible, this step allows patients to clearly see, often for the first time, the areas where bacteria accumulate.

GOAL: To precisely identify “problem areas” so that biofilm removal can be as effective as possible, without unnecessarily treating healthy surfaces, while also educating patients on proper oral hygiene techniques.

We explain how to properly maintain oral hygiene at home and emphasize the importance of prevention. We demonstrate the correct brushing technique, the use of interdental brushes, dental floss, electric toothbrushes, and other oral hygiene aids.

GOAL: To motivate patients to become active participants in maintaining the health of their teeth and gums while reducing future biofilm accumulation.

Using AIRFLOW® MAX technology and the finest EMS AIRFLOW® PLUS Powder, we gently remove biofilm, stains, and soft deposits from the teeth, gums, and hard-to-reach areas — both above and below the gumline.

GOAL: To gently, effectively, and minimally invasively remove biofilm and surface stains.

PERIOFLOW® enables the cleaning of deeper periodontal pockets, implants, and difficult-to-access areas that conventional cleaning cannot reach.

GOAL: To remove biofilm from deep areas without damaging the teeth, soft tissues, or implants.

After removing soft deposits, we use the PIEZON® PS ultrasonic instrument for the gentle removal of any remaining calculus (tartar). For implants, we use the special PIEZON® PI MAX instrument, designed to safely clean implant surfaces without causing damage.

GOAL: To precisely remove hard deposits while protecting the teeth, gums, and implants.

After the treatment, we carefully check whether all biofilm and calculus have been removed. We also assess the condition of the teeth, identify possible caries, and evaluate existing fillings and restorations.

GOAL: To ensure that the teeth are thoroughly cleaned, healthy, and protected after the treatment.

We create an individualized maintenance and recall schedule based on each patient’s needs.

GOAL: Through regular maintenance visits, we help prevent the re-accumulation of biofilm and preserve long-term oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions – GBT

No. Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is completely pain-free. Thanks to the use of warm water and ultra-fine powder, many patients compare the experience to a “spa treatment for the teeth” or a gentle dental massage.

Yes. GBT treatment is completely safe and highly recommended for all types of teeth and dental restorations, including dental implants, crowns, bridges, and orthodontic appliances.

It is especially recommended for patients with sensitive teeth, gum problems, or dental implants, as the treatment is gentle, minimally invasive, and designed to protect both teeth and soft tissues.

Professional teeth cleaning with the GBT protocol is generally recommended every 6 months, combined with regular at-home oral hygiene and routine dental check-ups.

The ideal frequency may vary depending on your oral health condition and individual needs.

Yes. It is safe for children aged 6 and above.

GBT treatment is much more than professional teeth cleaning — it is an investment in the long-term health of your smile. Regular Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) helps reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease while protecting the enamel and soft tissues. In addition, GBT effectively removes stains caused by coffee, tea, and smoking, leaving your teeth feeling clean, smooth, and naturally brighter.

It typically lasts between 45 and 60 minutes, depending on the condition of your teeth and gums.

The longevity of GBT treatment results depends largely on your at-home oral hygiene routine. Regular brushing, choosing the right toothbrush, using interdental brushes, and attending regular dental check-ups help maintain optimal results.

Patients regularly leave highly positive reviews and often recommend GBT treatment to their family and friends. Compared to traditional teeth cleaning methods, GBT is considered more comfortable, gentle, and effective.

Patients especially appreciate:

  • the pain-free experience,
  • the use of warm water during treatment,
  • and the educational aspect of seeing their own biofilm (soft dental plaque), which helps improve oral hygiene habits at home.

Many patients notice that their teeth appear brighter after a GBT treatment. Although Guided Biofilm Therapy does not use bleaching agents, the removal of surface stains and biofilm helps restore the natural brightness and shine of the teeth, often creating a visible whitening effect.

It is recommended to wait approximately 30 minutes after GBT treatment before eating or drinking. This allows any remaining powder particles to clear naturally and gives the teeth and oral tissues time to stabilize after the procedure.

I had an 11-tooth bridge made and it was a wonderful experience. The staff is very kind, knowledgeable, professional, and everything was done within the agreed time frame, even earlier. I would recommend anyone who needs a dentist to contact Hondlova 2A and the Studio Dental Frntić team, you won’t be able to take the smile off their face.

Danijela D.

I would like to share my more than positive experience with Studio Dental Frntić, where I received an extremely professional service. But even more important was the warm, human approach of a very dear doctor who, with her approach, revealed to me a completely new approach to my teeth and gums. I must emphasize that I received education on dental hygiene, which I recommend to absolutely everyone because I believe that many people, like me before, do it the wrong way. I was also delighted with the professional GBT teeth cleaning. It is great that there is parking for patients. Every recommendation!
