Periodontics

All you need to know about periodontal disease

What is Periodontology?

Periodontology or periodontics is a branch of dentistry that treats and heals periodontal structures – i.e. supporting structures of teeth consisting of gingiva and gums, bone and periodontal ligament. Since periodontal diseases are quite common, it is important to highlight that maintaining good oral hygiene can prevent periodontal disease.

In cases where the infection has already caused a lot of damage to the gums and impaired the condition of the bones, we need to treat it because, in the majority of cases, adequate treatment can improve the situation.

Common Periodontal Diseases

The most common periodontal diseases are gingivitis and periodontitis, and the symptom of both diseases is bleeding gums. The difference is that gingivitis affects the surface structures and if it is not treated it can progress towards periodontitis. On the other hand, periodontitis affects deep supporting structures, which destroys the bone and causes it to become thinner and eventually withdrawn.

Treatment of Gingivitis and Periodontitis

Therapy of gingivitis includes plaque and tartar removal above the edges of the gingiva, while the periodontitis is successfully treated by cleaning tartar below the gum line. The results of the treatment can be improved by surgical therapy, if necessary.

During the periodontal treatment, we additionally educate the patient about the proper brushing and maintenance of oral hygiene so that the results of the treatment are successful.

Periodontal treatment doesn’t end with the therapy in our clinic. To make sure the periodontal disease doesn’t come back, the therapy needs to be performed regularly at home and supervised by a dental doctor on regular check-ups. Unfortunately, periodontal treatment requires extraction of the teeth that have been heavily affected by the disease in order to eliminate high risks factors for systemic diseases.

Patients often come with a very advanced form of periodontitis when it is almost impossible to save the teeth. In such cases, we advise consultation about dental implant therapy.
